Locomotive has significance as the class leader of a very important class of locomotive on the NSWGR, and the ultimate development of the express passenger steam locomotive. The 38 Class had the highest boiler pressure of any locomotive in Australia and the first in NSW to be equipped with roller bearings. The design represented an advancement of the one-piece cast-steel frame by incorporating the cylinders, main air reservoir, and even the bracket for mounting the air compressor. The class is significant as it illustrates the increase in locomotive power and the improvements in passenger services in the post-World War 2 period. Locomotive is historically significant as the first steam train to cross Australia from east to west, and for its role at the head of the Bicentennial Train, reaching every mainland capital. It has a distinctive and attractive steam-lined form influenced by contemporary overseas designs from the late s in Britain and the USA, as part of a promotional strategy to make train travel seem modern and fast. Locomotive has a high level of social significance. The 38 Class made extensive use of a number of technical improvements and innovations developed on earlier engines for performance enhancement and reliability. Locomotive also has the potential to reveal information about the practice of streamlining. Technically, and apart from the streamlined nose and cowling, it has all the features of the class including the 25 non-streamlined locomotives.

Brisbane to Sydney Road Trip – The Central Coast NSW Posted on May 13, December 9, by Larissa Dening Before leaving Port Stephens for the next leg of our “Brisbane to Sydney Road Trip – The Central Coast NSW” we got up early to do a dawn shoot at Shoal /13/brisbane-sydney-road-trip-central-coast-nsw.
We took a short cut through the the caravan park while it was still dark to get to the beach. Luckily there was a lovely young couple that were going for a walk on the beach to watch the sunrise at the same time because when we got the gate to get out of the caravan park you had to enter a code which we had no clue about. Once we got down onto the beach we found some beautiful red rocks to use as foreground interest and we got set up and waited to see what the sky was going to do. The sand was usually a meter higher than what it currently was.
Dawn shoot at Shoal Bay After the sun had come up we headed back to the hotel for a shower and some breakfast. Then we hit the road again for the Central Coast with a stop at Newcastle on the way as I had never been there before. I was really impressed with Newcastle. I had always envisioned it to be a dirty, industrial town from what I have been told but its actually a really cool place.

Aboriginal history[ edit ] Newcastle and the lower Hunter Region were traditionally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal People, who called the area Malubimba. His discovery of the area was largely accidental; as he had been sent in search of a number of convicts who had seized a locally-built vessel called Cumberland as she was sailing from Sydney Cove. Shortland entered what he later described as “a very fine river”, which he named after New South Wales’ Governor John Hunter.
Over the next two years, coal mined from the area was the New South Wales colony’s first export. Philip Gidley King , the Governor of New South Wales from , decided on a more positive approach to exploit the now obvious natural resources of the Hunter Valley. In the same year, the first shipment of coal was dispatched to Sydney.
This settlement closed less than a year later. A settlement was again attempted in , as a place of secondary punishment for unruly convicts. The settlement was named Coal River, also Kingstown and then renamed Newcastle, after England’s famous coal port.

Bowral to Picton via Thirlmere on weekdays only Overview Edit The CityRail network is a hybrid of three different types of passenger railway: Most intercity trains terminate at Central whereas most suburban except Carlingford line services will proceed through the City Circle which is a loop of metro-style underground stations which receives a higher frequency of services although these services will still run according to a timetable much like the rest of the Cityrail network. Inner suburban areas will receive a higher frequency of services than outer suburban areas as some designated services will terminate at allocated stations midway through the line to cope with the higher urban density of inner-city suburbs.
There is evidence this hybrid arrangement was deliberate. The design of the early electric carriages was developed as a combination of the high-capacity, low-boarding time of the New York Subways trains and the existing English long carriage design that was established in Australia’s long-haul steam train system. CityRail also operates several interurban services that terminate at Central Station though some services operate in the metro-style portions of the system in the peak hours.
These lines stretch over km 99 mi from Sydney, as far north as Newcastle, as far west as Lithgow, as far south-west as Goulburn and as far south as Kiama and Port Kembla. Southern Highlands trains require a connection at Campbelltown as they run into the city during peak hours only. Regional services operate from the terminus station at Newcastle, with local electric services to the Central Coast and diesel services to Maitland.
